The head of the Terrrace R-C-M-P detachment says he supports the idea of an independent watchdog monitoring the police force.

Inspector Eric Stubbs was reacting to Wednesday’s release of the B-C Civil Liberties Association’s report on policing in northern and rural B-C.

Among other things, the report said British Columbians are not comfortable with the idea of police investigating police when members are accused of misconduct.
Stubbs says he supports the idea of civilian oversight.

“I’m a member of the British Columbia Association of Police Chiefs, and we have discussed this issue, voted on it and have supported that motion too, and I personally support that notion as well,” said Stubbs, adding “we have no problems with someone coming in and conducting these investigations, or whether it’s just overseeing the investigation that’s done, whatever model they choose.”

On Wednesday, Skeena-Bulkley Valley M-P Nathan Cullen blasted the Conservative government for sitting on a bill that would introduce independent investigations of police in situations like these.
