Cullen protests Eurocan subsidy
PRINCE GEORGE CITIZEN
NDP MP Nathan Cullen is demanding the federal government not give $33 million in subsidy money to forest giant West Fraser.
The Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP told media in Terrace the firm is slated to receive the cash from the black liquor tax subsidy, which was the federal response to a massive U.S. tax credit geared towards American forest companies.
However, Cullen said the cash should be given to a potential buyer of West Fraser’s now closed Eurocan mill in Kitimat; be given to unionized workers at the mill to keep it warm as a buyer is sought; or be returned to the community.
