Senior games athletes are golden

Eighty-one Northwest athletes brought home 82 medals from the BC Seniors Games held in the Comox Valley and Campbell River on Vancouver Island.

The medal breakdown is 34 gold, 22 silver and 26 bronze.

Local athlete Leona Smith said the games were well organized, lots of fun and could be her last. Her five medal win would be a good place to retire, while she’s on top.

“It is about the medals,” she said. “Anyone who says they don’t care about the medals, well I care, I don’t know why they say that.”

She said her team tried for a world record in the 4×100 metre race but missed it by two seconds. On the team with her was the oldest athlete at the games 91-year-old Olga Kotelko of West Vancouver plus Louise Sorensen of Surrey and Brigitte Killat of Campbell River.
