NWCC supports Family Literacy Day

TERRACE – As a strong supporter of community literacy initiatives, Northwest Community College (NWCC) is pleased to be among the local partners asked to take part in this weekend’s annual Family Literacy Day celebration.

To celebrate Family Literacy Month, the Terrace Community Literacy Group will host the event on Saturday, Jan. 29 from 1 pm to 4 pm at Suwilaawks Community School (Clarence Michiel) at 3430 Sparks St in Terrace. This free family event is open to everyone and a soup and bannock lunch will be provided. In addition, families that attend will receive a goody bag with pencils, pens and bookmarks, as well as a free new children’s book.

NWCC will be represented by staff and faculty from the Career & College Preparation (CCP), Adult Special Education Workplace Skills Training
(ASEWST) and Early Childhood Education (ECE) departments, as well as a variety of other groups, including the NWCC Library.

The theme for this year’s event is “playing with literacy” and will include playing with words, board and card games, physical activities that might involve reading clues, or putting on a play – whatever gets participants thinking. NWCC’s head librarian, Melanie Wilke, says the fun and interactive theme should get people involved.

“One of the exciting outcomes of the event will be a chance for literacy providers to demonstrate a wide range of literacy activities – activities not always associated with literacy, but that do have great merit,” Wilke said. “Great literacy activities can include board games, card games, cooking, playdough – any activity that stimulates conversation in a family.”

Last year, 125 families attended the Family Literacy Day event, which is made possible by the support of some 20-plus local groups and partners, including Northwest Community College.
