Northwest Community College celebrates student award winners

TERRACENorthwest Community College (NWCC) awarded approximately $83,000 in internal and external awards to a total of 106 students from across the College region during the 2009-10 academic year and each fall several of these award winners are celebrated at the College’s campuses in Prince Rupert, Smithers and Terrace. Some of the recent recipients include:

Prince Rupert’s David Dias made his transition to college – he’s enrolled in the University Credit program – a little easier by earning an entrance scholarship for achieving the highest grade point average among graduating students from Charles Hays Secondary.

Also from the nursing program, graduate Tara Orleans of Port Edward was one of four recipients of the BC Medical Services Foundation Bursary.

A number of double award winners hailed from Terrace. David Hansen from the Business Administration program earned one of 10 Irving K. Barber One World Scholarships awarded to NWCC students. They are awarded to students pursuing part of their post-secondary studies overseas. Hansen was part of a group of business students that went to Qingdao, China this past spring; Hansen also received one of three CAZ Awards.

Second-year First Nations Fine Arts student Stephanie Anderson celebrated two awards. Anderson was one of three recipients of a YVR Art Foundation Award. The $5,000-award also comes with a one-year exhibit of her art at Vancouver International Airport. Other winners were: Cherish Alexander of Kitwanga and Latham Mack of Bella Coola. Anderson also earned an Irving K. Barber BC Aboriginal Student Award, established in 2008 by the province to reduce financial barriers.

Fellow second-year First Nations Fine Arts student Carol Young took home a pair of awards, too. From Prince Rupert, Young earned the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art Mature Student Award – a new award contributed by journalist and writer Bruce Byfield in memory of his late wife Patricia L. Williams. She also earned the Freda Diesing Award, which goes to a student involved in the arts, cultural activities and/or community social action.

Meaghan Calhoun of New Hazelton earned an entrance scholarship for earning the top GPA in her graduating class at Hazelton Secondary School.

Smithers student Edwina Young was one of 18 winners of the Alma Van Dusen Award, which is sponsored by the College and the Vancouver Foundation and is awarded to women in a credit program.

Finally, Houston’s Amanda Veillette, a Professional Cook 1 student, received the Michael Kelly Bursary Fund.
