Food drive tops 17,000 items
A TIRED but excited Peter Weeber had the grand total within minutes of the 7 pm end on Oct. 30 of a week long drive to collect food items for the Terrace Churches Food Bank.
And that final number – 17,672, topped the goal of 12,500 non perishable food items when the drive began at the start of the week.
By Saturday morning, Oct. 30, the total stood at 16,096 items, reported Weeber, Terrace’s fire chief.
By Saturday evening, the contributions from people throughout the community added up to 8,009 items with 2,963 items collected from Terrace and Thornhill schools and 6,000 items either donated or pledged over the next month from businesses.
The 12,500 item goal represents one item for each person in the area.
Weeber said he was proud of how people, businesses, schools and groups responded as the days went on following the official Oct. 24 start of the campaign.
A steady stream of people dropped off items at the fire hall all week long.
Just as 7 pm came, Weeber said the people from Spa Essentials showed up with 240 items.
That was the product of the spa offering its service in return for a minimum eight item donation.
“That was a really good idea,” said Weeber.
