Awards Galore at NCLGA Convention
The first annual Measuring Up The North Awards of Excellence were given out last night at the NCLGA Convention in Smithers. The MUTN Awards recognize local governments, businesses, groups or individuals who have shown innovation and ingenuity in their quest to build more livable, age-friendly, disability-friendly universally designed inclusive communities for all of residents and visitors in the NCLGA region. The winners were:
Over 5000 Population
• Winner: City of Dawson Creek
• Honourable Mention: Cariboo Regional District
Under 5000 Population
• Winner: District of Tumbler Ridge
• Honourable Mention: Horsefly District Board of Trade
• Honourable Mention: District of Chetwynd
Individual Category
• Winner: Nancy Harris, Fraser-Fort George Regional District
• Honourable Mention: Diane Rogers, City of Quesnel
NCLGA Members also received special recognition at the Convention for milestone anniversaries. The City of Prince Rupert was presented with a plaque recognizing their 100th anniversary. Other members celebrating significant anniversaries were Fort St. James, 15 years; New Hazelton, 30 years; Port Clements, 35 years; 100 Mile House and Hudson’s Hope, 45 years, Stewart, 80 years; and Prince George, 95 years.
The Cariboo Regional District took home the Gold Star Resolution Award for their resolution on Palliative Care Fees. The award is presented annually for the best-crafted resolution. Honourable Mention went to the Villages of Burns Lake and Valemount.
A highlight of the Convention was a tribute given to Mayor Alice Maitland of the Village of Hazelton who is celebrating 40 years as an elected official in Local Government.
Over 250 delegates attended the NCLGA’s 55th Annual Convention this week in Smithers. The 2011 NCLGA Convention will be hosted by the City of Prince Rupert.
