New Poll shows major opposition to Enbridge PipelineFrançais

A new poll released by Angus Reid has found that more than half of Northern British Columbian residents oppose Enbridge’s plan to build a pipeline to carry crude oil from the Alberta Tar Sands to Kitimat on the BC coast. Less than one third support the proposal.

The poll asked respondents for their opinion on Enbridge’s proposed 525,000 barrel/day ‘Northern Gateway’ pipeline across Northern BC as well as Kinder Morgan’s plans to expand their TransMountain pipeline to carry 700,000 barrels/day to the Lower Mainland. The results show significant opposition throughout the province with close to half of all respondents condemning both proposals.

Fully half of all respondents province wide, and 58% of Northerners said that they think the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project is “a bad idea that could lead to environmental disaster”.

The Angus Reid poll surveyed British Columbian adults between August 24th and 25th and is considered accurate to within 3.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20. See here for full results.

The Angus Reid questions did not mention the 225 supertankers that would have to travel through the fragile waters of the Inside Passage and Hecate Strait in order to reach Enbridge’s pipeline terminal. In May, a Mustel poll showed that 80 percent of British Columbians suport banning crude oil tankers in B.C.‘s coastal waters up from 72 percent in a similar 2009 poll.
