Re: Support for Member’s BillC-472, the RCMP Civilian Oversight Act
To The Honourable Vic Toews:
I am writing to express my strong support of MP Nathan Cullen’s Private Member’s Bill C-472, the RCMP Civilian Oversight Act, and to urge you to support this proposal. Bill C-472 will create a much-needed independent Civilian Investigation Service to ensure independent investigations for all incidents of death or serious injury occurring in RCMP custody.
As Minister of Public Safety, your work is essential to our country’s welfare, and I urge you to promote the functioning of an accountable and effective national police force in this role. Bill C-472 complements the Ministry’s goal of protecting citizens by fostering a renewed sense of trust and accountability between citizens and RCMP officers. Such a reform is in keeping with your mandate to enhance transparency, achieve reform, and promote the trust of the Canadian people.
I would like your guarantee that the reforms to RCMP Oversight indicated in the 2010 Federal Budget will include the creation of a fully independent civilian investigative service. This is the only way to guarantee impartiality and secure public confidence.
Reform of the RCMP oversight regime has been expressed as a priority of this government. Please show your commitment to furthering accountability and renewing public trust in the RCMP.
Sincerely,
