ACTION ALERT: Send a Letter to Stop the $58 Million Bailout for Asbestos

UPDATE June 30, 2010 – Canadian Cancer Society takes strong stand against asbestos subsidy. Read more here

ACTION ALERT: The Quebec Government is planning to give a $58 Million subsidy to reopen a long shut asbestos mine in the town of Asbestos, Quebec and boost the export of the deadly material around the world. The federal conservatives have long backed this deadly trade.

The Canadian Cancer Society is a highly respected national organization that has added its voice to calls for an end to the export of asbestos. We need your help to encourage them to take a strong, public stand against this government’s plan to prop up the killer industry.

Please see the following note from Kathleen Ruff

Dear friends,

If you can, please could you get as many people as possible to sent a quick, short message to Peter Goodhand, CEO, pgoodhand@cancer.ca and Jimm Simon, Chair jsimon@mb.cancer.ca of the Canadian Cancer Society urging that the CCS put out a public statement opposing the proposed $58 million subsidy for increased asbestos export to the developing world. Letters from overseas, Quebec and rest of Canada would all be great.

It seems that pressure is being put on the Canadian Cancer Society to not release a public statement. It would be very sad if they failed to speak up publicly at this critical moment on this critical issue. A private letter to Premier Charest would be worse than no letter, in my opinion, as it would send a clear message that they will publicly keep quiet and creates a climate of collusion and non-transparency which empowers the asbestos industry.

If the Canadian Cancer Society puts out a strong, clear statement calling on the Quebec government not to give the $58 million subsidy it is presently considering giving, it would make a big difference in the chances of stopping this subsidy to asbestos disease in developing countries.

Thank you!.
